Three vases in wild Irish ash

an exploration in nature, material and process

Concept

Three vases in wild Irish ash are a small exploration in nature, material and process. The riven vase is split from a green log of wild Irish ash, the hand planed vase is sawn from kiln dried boards and left with a raw hand planed finish, and the hand rubbed oil vase is sanded and highly finished. Each process and finish explore the nature of the material in a subtle way.

Materials

The wild Irish ash trees are sourced from Co. Wicklow and are either windblown or have reached their end of life and need to be taken down. They are unmanaged "wild" trees giving them a much more interesting character of pattern, form and colours as they develop branches naturally and twist in the sun. A glass liner contains the water and can be easily removed for cleaning.
