Riven Vase
Riven Vase
riven and carved from scorched wild Irish ash
Concept
Riven Vase is created from a solid, round log of wild Irish ash. The froe (riving axe) is used to split the log and follows the structure of the tree to create a unique vase each time. The carving axe is used to shape the edges creating a beautiful convex curve.
One inch copper cylinders are used to hold the stems and are oxidised to give a striking green colour. The cylinders are embedded into the bases.
Materials
The wild Irish ash is sustainably sourced from a very well renowned forester that practices continuous cover forestry along the east coast of Ireland. This sustainable material is the starting point for all my pieces.
The ash is scorched using a blow torch and is finished with three coats of a natural, hand rubbed oil to give a luxurious finish.
The copper is sanded and then oxidised using a mild ammonia solution.
